Penzance Youth String Orchestra and Dala Violinisterna
by Tim Boulton - Saturday, 24 July 2010, 01:09 AM

Penzance Youth String Orchestra and Swedish violin ensemble Dala Violinisterna have recently completed an exciting week making music and having fun together in West Cornwall. They performed 5 concerts together in five days, cementing a close relationship which began nearly a year ago when PYSO visited central Sweden. Part of one of their performances at St. Just's Lafrowda Day was videoed by a passer-by and has appeared on youtube:

Drumming up a good OFSTED report
by Ross Hamilton - Wednesday, 23 June 2010, 10:35 PM

Congratulations to the African Drummers at St Erme with Trispen Primary school who got a couple of mentions in a recent OFSTED inspection report.

http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/oxedu_reports/display/(id)/120446

"A recent visit by staff from the partner school in Kenya had promoted interest in their culture and history, and inspectors saw African drumming of a high standard as a result."

And from the letter to parents:
"You know a lot about how other people live and about their culture, through your links with schools in Birmingham and Kenya. I was very impressed with your African drumming!"
Well done everybody!

CYJO and NYJC tutors Jazz Concert
by Andy Bilham - Wednesday, 12 May 2010, 09:01 PM

If you are at a loose end on Saturday evening, why not pop along to St. Andrew's Church, Clinton Road, Redruth at 7.30pm where the Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra octet 'The Groove Merchants' will join with four top London players who have been working with our young jazz musicians since Christmas.

Mark Lockheart (sax), Simon Colam (piano), Mark Hodgson (bass) and Andrew Bain (drums) will play the second half of this 'not-to-be-missed' gig. Their interplay and improvisational skills are a joy to hear, and you will soon realise why these practitioners are tutors at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music amongst others.

Tickets are a stunningly cheap £5, there is a donations bar, and all proceeds go to 'Searchlight', the Redruth parish youth group.

A nice glass of wine, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic acoustics, and some top class jazz from seasoned professionals and musicians of the future - what more could you ask for!

Good news about our WOPPs classes!
by Andy Bilham - Thursday, 11 March 2010, 09:35 PM

I would like to share this bit of positive news with you.

This is an extract from a recent Ofsted inspection at Antony School, Torpoint where Rachel Waters and Olivia Loewendahl happened to be doing a Wider Opportunities violin class when inspectors were there.

"The school's good curriculum includes a strong emphasis on developing the pupils' speaking, listening and practical skills. For example, the intense interest shown by Years 3 and 4 pupils during their whole-class violin lesson clearly illustrated their ability to learn well collaboratively and as individuals."

Congratulations and thank you to Rachel and Olivia.

Very best wishes

Launceston Strings

Well done to all the members of Launceston Strings, who were able to play at the Wadebridge Music Festival on March 3rd. It was a splendid performance, despite a few gaps in attendance, and it earned some very pleasing comments from the adjudicator.

Rehearsals continue as normal until the end of term.

NYJC free concert this Sunday!
by Andy Bilham - Monday, 8 March 2010, 09:18 PM

Just a reminder that the tutors and students on the 2nd National Youth Jazz Collective weekend (which takes place in Helston at the end of this week) will be performing another free concert open to all this coming Sunday 14th March 2010.

But beware - unlike the previous concert, this Sunday's free entertainment will take place in the Music Department of Helston School on Church Hill, Helston, and not the Main School Hall as before. The concert begins at 3.30pm, and will last about 90 minutes.

So if you would like to hear Simon Colam (pno), Mark Hodgson (bass), Andrew Bain (drums) and Chris Batchelor (tpt), along with some of Cornwall's most talented young jazz musicians in action, come along early to make sure you have a seat. See you there!!
